The Winchester Mystery House is the beautiful but bizarre mansion built by Sarah Pardee Winchester, heiress of the Winchester Repeating Arms fortune. Construction began in 1884, and didn’t stop for 38 years until Sarah’s death in 1922. The architectural wonder and historic landmark in San Jose, CA was once the personal residence of the tragedy-ridden Mrs. Winchester. Convinced she was tormented by the spirits of Winchester Rifle victims, Mrs. Winchester moved to California and built the dizzying Victorian-style structure with many odd and mysterious features. Doors that open to walls, stairways that lead to the ceiling, and many more oddities in the massive mansion. Featuring 160 rooms, 52 skylights, 47 stairways and fireplaces, 17 chimneys, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens, the mansion is a staggering 24,000 square feet. The unusual mysteries are what has drawn over 12 million guests to visit the Winchester Mystery House since it opened to the public in 1923.
